Abstract

Our industry sponsor, Unitil Corporation, is a public utility company based in Hampton, New Hampshire, responsible for providing natural gas and electricity to customers throughout regions of New England. As a utility company, there are standards in place to ensure the reliable and safe delivery to its customers throughout the region. As time passes, components age and new industry standards are put forth; this proposed station design addresses significant icing issues, capacity issues, different forms of overpressure protection to prevent catastrophic events, and other operational challenges. Our report outlines design considerations, design criteria, and alternative solutions, while adhering to Unitil O&M standards, federal and state gas safety codes, and industry best practices. Key aspects include the capacity statement, design parameters, pressure control, overpressure protection, filtration, metering, preheating, and SCADA implementation. In designing the station, calculations regarding gas flow, hoop stress, gas velocity, pressure differentials, and preheating were performed to ensure our recommendations fell within industry safety practices and Unitil’s standards. The station will serve as an intermediate pressure supply into the Portsmouth gas distribution system and this project is the first step to building and constructing a functioning natural gas regulating station.
