Abstract

This senior project investigates the optimization of pressure sensor placement within smart insoles to improve the precision of gait analysis. The primary objective is to accurately detect heel strike and toe-off events, pivotal for comprehensive gait assessment. A method employing a flexible pressure sensor array with 96 sensors adaptable to various foot sizes was developed. Ground reaction force (GRF) at each step was calculated by amalgamating data from all sensors, and dynamic thresholds were established to identify heel-strike and toe-off points during walking steps. The project involved data collection from eight subjects walking at different speeds on level ground to determine optimal sensor locations. Results reveal specific sensor placements crucial for precise detection of gait events, facilitating advanced gait analysis techniques. This research contributes valuable insights to the refinement of smart insole design and the enhancement of gait analysis accuracy, thus holding significant implications for biomechanical research and clinical applications.
