Abstract

An important part of ESI mass spectrometry is consideration of physical properties of an analyzed sample. The surface tension of the solvents used can impact how well samples are ejected from the emitter and vaporized. The goal of this project was to examine the properties of various solvents and how different mixtures effected the surface tensions. A tensiometer was used to measure solutions of 2-propanol to standardize and calibrate the instrument, creating a procedure with good repeatability. Multiple ammonium acetate solutions were measured and found to have a linear correlation between surface tension and concentration. Lower ammonium acetate salt concentrations result in lower surface tensions and therefore more effective ionization.
