Abstract

The Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology has load capacity concerns for specific areas on the fifth floor. This space is needed to store files and specimens. Having been constructed during different times throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, each area of the building uses a different structural system. The only documents provided were floor plans during the era of construction and a brief virtual site tour. Each team member was assigned a specific area to investigate. Once floor systems were deciphered, capacity calculations were performed following the National Design Specification Code for Timber and American Institute of Steel Construction code. The results of the capacity calculations correlate to the amount of additional load the museum can store on this floor.
