Abstract

Wells #4 and #5 of the Farmington, NH, Water Distribution System, are experiencing elevated levels of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and Total Organic Carbon (TOC). Underwood Engineers was hired by the Town of Farmington to investigate solutions to this issue and contracted Blueleaf Inc., an independent pilot testing company, to conduct a pilot study on the effectiveness of traditional oxidation filtration. Initial results did not meet the required standards of treatment, due to the high concentrations of TOC present which inhibited the removal of manganese. Treatment methods were researched to create a proposed treatment system viable for removing iron and manganese from high organic carbon sources. Paramount to the characteristics of the proposed system were treatment effectiveness, longevity, ease of maintenance, and overall cost.
