Abstract

This study investigates the time-dependent behavior of cobaloxime catalyst self-assembly on functionalized titanium dioxide (TiO2) surfaces using photocatalysis to quantify the results. Photocatalysts like cobaloxime, in the presence of TiO2, when exposed to UV light transfer electrons to hydrogen ions in water to evolve hydrogen gas. Comparative studies relating fully synthesized catalysts anchoring on TiO2 vs. prefunctionalization of isonicotinic acid (ISO) on TiO2 have not been explored to compare efficiencies. Here we show stirring precursor overnight with ISO functionalized TiO2 shows a turnover number of 6.71 compared to fully the synthesized catalyst TON of 8.08. Stirring the precursor overnight with the functionalized TiO2 yields 83% of what would be produced with full preparation and synthesis to bind the additional ISO ligand. Our results demonstrate how time and effort can be saved by loading isonicotinic acid on beforehand and using the functionalized TiO2 instead of going through the time-consuming process of synthesizing the catalyst.
