Abstract

Spin is the key to determine magnetic properties of the macroscopic matter. Skyrmion is a vortex-like spin orientation found in several magnetic materials with specific symmetry. It exhibits nano-sized particle-like behavior stabilized at finite temperatures. It can be driven by extremely low current density, making its manipulation at low energy cost. Therefore, it is a promising building block for next generation information storage and memory devices. To land these applications, it is essential to understand the dynamics of skyrmion. Under an electric current, skyrmion moves in the direction of the current, but also in the perpendicular direction, making the skyrmion manipulation difficult. Recent studies have experimentally showed that skyrmion can be confined in a one-dimensional highway made from helical lanes. The velocity of skyrmion therein is also boosted by one order of magnitude. In this work, we will theoretically describe the dynamics of such confined skyrmion. This research elucidates the groundbreaking observation of one-dimensional boosted motion of skyrmion, and will make impact to both fundamental magnetic physics and technological applications.
