Abstract

Project Pedicab aims to provide free rides to people in the community in the hope that they will then pay the positive experience forward. This can then generate a ripple effect of kindness. Rooted in the theory of "reciprocityā€¯, our project aims to play a part in fostering a community where mutual support thrives. The goal of the pedicab mechanical engineering team is to design a pedicab with innovative and practical features to be used in the Portsmouth, NH area, ensuring efficiency for the operator and comfort for the riders. We started with a pedicab from last year's team that was not functional, and several areas of improvement were identified by our sponsor. We initially designed modifications for the frame that would allow for the installation of components that would be better suited for the weight and demands of the pedicab. Upon performing analyses on the frame, we realized that we could significantly reduce the weight by performing a complete redesign. This was performed with SolidWorks simulations to ensure the integrity of the design. We also redesigned the drivetrain with a novel design that aims to solve issues identified by the sponsor. A roof was also designed to satisfy another area of improvement identified by the sponsor. Future goals for the project are to build the new pedicab design and then use it to provide free rides to the community.
