Abstract

Restaurant owners face a significant challenge in maintaining profitability as they grapple with the impact of inflation. This issue poses a big problem for small restaurant owners who lack the time, resources, or expertise to track and respond effectively. Edflation helps solve this problem by providing restaurant owners a website to upload their menu and receive summaries of real dollar impacts on their businesses. We've built a user-friendly website for restaurant owners to upload menus (PDF or image) and get inflation estimates back for each meal’s ingredients along with yearly aggregate estimates. Using Optical Character Recognition to extract text from uploaded menus, that text is then passed into Generative Language Models to reformat and predict additional ingredients. US Bureau of Labor Statistics data is then taken to compute inflation rates for each meal to be displayed to the user. The success of Edflation will be measured by several criteria. The first criteria dictates that at least 90% of ingredients on a menu must be identified correctly, including accurate inflation estimates. The second criteria dictates at least 75% of surveyed customers must find our service easy to use. The last criteria dictates that the service uptime must be as close to 100% as possible.
