Abstract

The town of Brownfield, Maine has safety concerns regarding the intersection of Route 5/113, also referred to as Pequawket Trail, Route 160, and Depot Street. This intersection experiences high speeds and serves as a critical link between New Hampshire’s White Mountains and Maine’s Coastline. Along with dangerous travel speeds, the intersection design has an angled existing layout of Route 160 and on the northeast side sits Dillon’s Gas Station. The current geometric design of the intersection has three roadways connecting to Route 5/113 and the gas station has an exit that leads directly into the center of this intersection. Currently there is no pedestrian infrastructure making it very dangerous for any individual who needs to cross the intersection. The primary goal of this project was to design a safer roadway system for both pedestrians and vehicle traffic while maintaining a constant flow of traffic through this location. With the guidance of the project sponsor, Jordan Pike of HEB Engineers Inc., and the faculty advisor, Dr. Eshan Dave, the team spent several months analyzing traffic data, researching possible design alternative, and designing a new roadway plan set of the selected alternative. A decision matrix was used to determine that the addition of a turning lane combined with the redirection of Depot Street was the best design option for this location. After the design was completed a cost analysis was performed to estimate the total cost for this project.
