Abstract

The goal of this research was to synthesize a photocatalytic material known as Poly(heptazine imide) or K-PHI. This was produced by pyrolyzing Amorphous Melon mixed with KSCN in a tube furnace. Amorphous Melon had been synthesized by pyrolyzing Melamine. Both K-PHI and the mixture of Melon and KSCN were characterized using diffuse reflectance UV vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS), and FT-IR spectroscopy. Visual analysis of the reactants and products was also performed. Spectrums were compared to spectra from published studies. Results showed that the desired product was produced in a pure form and was distinct from its reactants. This synthesis was proven to be inexpensive and non-labor intensive. In the future the photocatalytic nature of this product will be tested. It may also be combined with another photocatalyst, Black Phosphorous, to determine whether their co-reaction fulfills a key step in renewable fuel production.
