Abstract

Modern virtual reality (VR) headsets enable rich, immersive 3D visuals and interactions which may enhance student engagement compared to traditional educational tools like textbooks and slideshows. Many tools now exist to produce high-fidelity 3D digital representations of real objects, allowing students the opportunity to explore digital twins of real-world locations in VR, including places that would normally be impractical to visit, such as a coral reef. We introduce Mobile VR Lab, a standalone solution for creating, synchronizing, and conducting VR lesson plans for a classroom of students. Our system targets low-cost Meta Quest 3 headsets along with an Android tablet running an application the instructor uses to direct the lesson plan in the VR headsets, and includes a lightweight server to locally connect the devices together and communicate asynchronously using the Tokio runtime for Rust on an air-gapped local network. Content is authored through the Unity development platform and uploaded directly to the headsets so that no Internet connection is required during the lesson. While our Mobile VR Lab project proves the feasibility of such a system, further research is needed to evaluate student engagement and learning outcomes compared to conventional educational methods.
