Abstract

The Independence Greenway, an established bike path, spans a 70-mile stretch from southern New Hampshire to Boston, Massachusetts. This project aims to extend the Independence Greenway, linking it from Essex Center Drive to Endicott Street, providing a safe route for users to bypass Route 128. To accommodate this extension, existing sidewalks will be widened to create a 10-foot shared-use path. To ensure safety, a barrier and 6-inch curb will be installed, separating pedestrian traffic from vehicles along the proposed route. The new path will be paved and will utilize an existing rail bed for approximately 3⁄4 of a mile. To facilitate safe passage across Proctor Brook and its wetlands, two timber bridges and a boardwalk will be constructed along the rail bed.
