Abstract

PFA, polyfluoroalkyl compounds, have been horrific to the waterways of the US. Within the United States, a presumptive 57,412 contamination sites have been reported with PFA. These molecules have strong C-F bonds that make these forever chemicals. Instead of trying to break these complexes down, cyclodextrin-based MOFs intend to encapsulate these harmful chemicals. Using alpha, beta, and gamma-cyclodextrin, due to the immense tunability of their pore size and biocompatibility, can synthesize crystalline structures by vapor diffusion. The most reliable CD-MOF that was created was using KOH. This was followed heavily through the literature and formed square-like crystals using gamma-cyclodextrin. Gamma and beta-cyclodextrin formed the easiest with many of the salts that were used. Na, Cu, Fe, Mg, Ca, and K were all used in trying to form new CD-MOFs. Gamma-CD-Fe/Na formed crystalline structures, however many of the other salts failed to crystallize within the flask. Each one of the suspected crystals was characterized through PXRD and SEM. Future work will look at cross-linking the CD-MOFs with Boric acid to ensure water stabilization and PFA encapsulation trials with the water-stable CD-MOF. Removing these chemicals from the water with the aid of CD-MOFs, will ensure the safety of millions, and prevent harm to even more.
