Abstract
The Clean Air Status and Trends Network (CASTNET) is a network of air quality monitoring sites across the US and Canada that collects weekly pollutant data. Utilizing CASTNET data, current site locations are spatially analyzed in order to eventually suggest optimized locations for one or multiple new stations. Using exploratory methods and model optimization techniques, areas potentially needing additional stations are identified, as well as areas that may have redundant coverage. Trends show pollutant averages increasing with decreases in elevation and latitude. When the goal is to maximize distance to the closest station and minimize pollutant average, a new site in Washington state is recommended; one that would increase the average distance between stations. For possible improvement - among other potential technical advantages - future researchers may want to refine the model based on industry desires for new sites.
