Abstract

Introducing the peptide Cys-Phe-His-Tyr-Asp-Phe used for the specific targeting and removal of lead (Pb) from water to better existing filtration techniques. This novel peptide contains carboxylate and thiolate functional groups similar to natural lead targeting molecules such as glutathione (GSH). Further, the imidazole group is anticipated to serve as the initial point of binding in the complexation process. The cyclic nature of the material allows for a hemidirected coordination with Pb2+ which achieves high thermodynamic stability with the stabilization of the stereochemically active lone pair (Graphical abstract). The discussed binding and dissociation constants will compare lead binding efficiency of this peptide to existing lead chelating compounds. Implementation of this material will be a step forward in improving the standard chemical remediation practices for safer drinking water.
