Abstract
Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) with varying laser scan speeds was utilized to manufacture specimens of 316L stainless steel containing keyhole (KH) and lack of fusion (LoF) flaws, in addition to those fully dense. Statistical distributions of size, aspect ratio, and circularity were determined using image analyses of microscopy and micro-X-ray computed tomography data for the KH and LoF specimens. The three sets of specimens were tested for creep strength to establish the relationship between the distributions and creep behavior under several constant stress levels at several elevated temperatures. The creep parameters were estimated using the measured creep data and then refined by a subsequent data fitting using the Mukherjee – Bird – Dorn equation. The quality of fits and established parameters for the creep behavior for the three material categories will be presented and discussed. The results revealed that the creep strength was more sensitive to LoF flaws than KH flaws.
