Abstract

Wildcat EMR is an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) web application for students that simulates existing patient record software within medical job settings, while also providing a way for educators to assess and prepare their students for those jobs. Similar to current EMRs, students can view patient information such as previous medical history, medications, allergies, test results, and more. Students can also add notes to a patient’s file and create advanced care plans, which can be seen by other students. All patients used in the software are simulated and created strictly by the educator to provide a wide variety of patient scenarios for their students, as well as being HIPAA compliant. The goal of the web application is to better prepare nursing students at the University of New Hampshire for their clinical experience in real hospitals, as well as to help nursing professors assess their student’s knowledge. Professors are able to see how efficiently and effectively their student’s use the program. The web application consists of a user interface that communicates with a backend database that holds patient information, care plans, and saved notes. The nursing department at UNH is planning on using the web application we have developed to better prepare students for EMR use in future endeavors.
