Abstract

Sled Hockey is an adaptive sport where players sit on aluminum-framed sleds with skates affixed to the bottom. The players propel themselves with two shortened hockey sticks with ice picks affixed to the butt end (opposite the blade). The goal of the project was to enable a player with limited hand dexterity to compete without the assistance of a pusher. A pusher is a skater who assists players who are unable to propel themselves, which limits the player’s autonomy and often reduces their opportunities to play. Working with a player through the Northeast Passage organization, a plan was developed to comply with sled hockey rules while still being effective. This player had limited ability to grip and straighten his wrist, so the design required a quick release mechanism to hold the stick in place, with a predetermined release force to prevent injury.
