Abstract

The goal of this project was to build a hybrid rocket, powered by paraffin wax and nitrous oxide, capable of launching an 8.8 pound payload to 10,000 feet and participating in the Spaceport America challenge. To manage the many requirements for a successful rocket the team was split into four sections - Avionics, Frame, Propulsion, and Payload/Recovery. This year we succeeded in performing 2 static fire tests, redesigning our hybrid engine, building our frame using fiberglass and acrylic, designing and building a custom nitrous oxide tank, designing and assembling a custom flight computer, performing several drop tests of our recovery system, and building a roll stabilizing gimbaled camera.
