Abstract

Haverhill, Massachusetts, one of the oldest communities in the state, is home to sprawling agricultural, suburban, and urban spaces. This project aims to redevelop a six-acre site in the heart of the city’s downtown, adjacent to the Merrimack River. The redevelopment of the site incorporates mixed-use design philosophies prioritizing pedestrian access, multi-function structures, and urban growth. Multi-disciplinary site civil design was completed to access the viability of the redevelopment and to optimize performance for the modern downtown community. Structural, parking, traffic, and stormwater analysis was performed in accordance with City of Haverhill and Massachusetts redevelopment design standards. The site was reconfigured to feature large greenspaces, a parking structure, and mixed-use infrastructure to promote pedestrian activity while creating a lively urban environment on the Merrimack River.
